What is a Better Business Bureau?

The Better Business Bureau of Vancouver Island is an independent, self-governing, non-profit organization established by members of our business community. Its aim is to encourage self-regulation, to promote truth in advertising and selling and it is dedicated to the building and preservation of public confidence in legitimate business. The 16 Canadian Better Business Bureaus are coordinated through the Canadian Council of Better Business Bureaus and the Council of Better Business Bureaus Inc. in the United States, which has more than 150 Bureaus including those in Puerto Rico. This information link enables us to provide continental coverage.

What does a BBB do?

The Better Business Bureau collects and reports information to help callers make informed decisions, answers phone inquiries about business reputations or gives general direction (55,000 plus a year at BBB Vancouver Island alone), receives, reconciles and resolves written complaints (2000 plus a year) and reports these to callers, educates business and consumers with news releases, TV and radio releases, guest speaking, trade show attendance and seminars, advises on all types of solicitations, works with other agencies, associations, police and all levels of government to assist businesses and consumers to be more informed and satisfied.

What doesn't a BBB do?

The Better Business Bureau does not undertake credit collections or give detailed credit advice, act as lawyers or interfere with legal processes, create any laws, charge people with legal action, do police work, participate in joint complaint resolutions, do referrals of any business, recommend or endorse prices or quality of goods and resources or act on verbal complaints.
